Mersad Berber, born on 1 January 1940 in Bosanski Petrovac, Kingdom of Yugoslavia and died on 7 October 2012 in Zagreb, is a Bosnian painter. Berber obtained a BA and MA degree at the Ljubljana Academy of Fine Arts and from 1978 he was a professor at the Sarajevo Academy of Fine Arts. Throughout his career, he has created cycles of paintings that recount events, tributes and dedications. Each cycle has its roots in the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina from medieval times to the 20th century. His works are characterized by the interweaving of ancient motifs with a more modern commentary. His works are as complex as his subjects, combining techniques from different eras and places while maintaining an aesthetic and allure that has attracted collectors for the past 40 years.
Berber has been busy with painting, graphic arts, tapestry, illustration and the preparation of bibliographic editions, graphics and poetic maps. His scenography and costumes are seen in theatres in Ljubljana, Zagreb, Sarajevo and Washington. In 1985 Berber finished "Tempo Secondo", his own animated comic. Berber is one of the most significant contemporary artists. He was included in the Tate Gallery collection in 1984. Since 1992 Mersad Berber has lived and worked in Zagreb and Dubrovnik.
